Our History - The Early Years
Meco Builders, Inc. is a construction company founded in Georgia 37 years ago by Registered Professional Engineer James B. McCraney. It is licensed in seven states and has done work in all of these. McCraney began with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During ten years with the Corps, he worked on numerous projects. His last position was as Chief of Structural Engineering at Carters Dam in Chatsworth, Georgia. After the completion of this project, he settled in Chatsworth and formed Meco Builders, Inc.
During its three decades, Meco had three major emphases. During the 1970’s it emphasized the design and erection of pre-engineered steel buildings for the carpet industry in North Georgia. During the 1980’s it emphasized the construction of parks and recreational areas for government agencies. Since 1990 it has emphasized the construction of public-school buildings. However, during all these periods it has undertake a variety of construction projects and proven itself in all of them.
Our Reputation Grows
In 1985 Meco constructed the historically precise Tom Bevill Visitor Center for the Corps of Engineers on the Tombigbee River in Pickensville, Alabama. Part of the job was a river docking facility for a refurbished snagboat called “The Montgomery,” which was floated to the site from Mobile. One deadline had to be met for this facility, another for the Center itself. Both deadlines were met. The website for the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway describe the Greek-Revival Center this way: “The Center features massive columns, detailed trimwork, a sweeping central stairway, and a magnificent view from the cupola walkway.” Another website states, “The house, built in the Greek Revival style that was popular before the Civil War, is accurate to its antebellum trappings down to the gates on the fence and the plants in the garden.” It also states that the architect drew details from three different antebellum homes, the balcony from one, the column and window designs from another, and the third-floor cupola from a third. A fourth mansion supplied some of the actual interior: “The stairway to the second floor is constructed from heart pine salvage from a plantation home.”
In the late 80’s Meco constructed a facility as the Resource Manager’s office at Lake Lanier, Georgia. The facility included a clerestory built over 12,000 square foot office facility. Both the clerestory and the elevated decks of the office facility were constructed of heavy timbers.
In 1990 Meco constructed the Town Creek Recreational Area near Columbus, Mississippi, also for the Corps of Engineers. The area had to be built from the ground up over existing woodlands next to the Tombigbee River and required among other things the reconstruction of Kennedy Lake. The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway website states: “Its modern facilities offer all the ‘comforts of home.’” It calls the Campground “a Class-A facility.” The 100 sites constructed by Meco offer complete accommodations for camping, primitive camping, fishing, and hiking its beautiful nature trail that “crosses the water in a number of places by way of wooden footbridges.”
Altogether Meco has completed 14 different contracts for the Corps of Engineers. Seven of those have been parks or recreational areas.
New Developments
Since 1990 Meco’s primary work has been in school construction at a time when both school population and public spending on education in the state of Georgia had soared. The company has built more than 35 public-school buildings-some elementary, middle, high school.
During all three of its decades, Meco has also built commercial buildings such as banks, local and state government buildings, and retail facilities.

This has included preliminary and final design of design-build projects, as well as budget estimating, final-cost estimating, progress scheduling, subcontractor coordination, quality-control assessment, safety-program enforcement, day-to-day onsite field management, project closeout, and warranty of all construction projects undertaken.
